Jane Eliza Pope
Hampshire, England, 1837
Jane’s sampler is a fine, classic example, with many delightful motifs arranged in a handsome and balanced composition – and she was only 7 years old! Included in the large assortment of pictorial motifs are dogs, birds, potted flowers, fruit baskets, ships, trees and crowns. The four-line verse is surrounded with a very good border of buds on a rhythmic, leafy vine and the excellent outer border provides a perfect visual framework for the composition.
Church of England baptismal records indicate that Jane Eliza Pope was the daughter of George and Jane Pope and that her baptism took place on October 11, 1829.
Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted into its original black and gold frame.
