Anne Paisey
Aberayron, Cardiganshire,
Wales, 1833

While we occasionally come across Welsh samplers, the majority are from later in the 19th century and the needlework is generally not very fine or precise. This earlier sampler is beautifully made and features a fine, large five-bay, double-chimney house, along with several little dogs and birds. Its attributes also include the name of the town in Wales, Aberayron which led us to be able to identify the samplermaker.
Anne Paisey was the daughter of William and Anne (Boulting) Paisey. Her baptism was recorded on August 2, 1820 in Llannerch Aeron, a village 4 miles from the lovely coastal town of Aberayon. Both are located northeast of Cardigan.
In 1844, Anne married Robert Beckerson at St. Martins-In-The-Fields, in London. They remained in London where Robert served as Superintendent of Metropolitan Police. They had 5 children born between 1846 and 1854. Anne died in 1856 and is buried in Brompton Cemetery.
The sampler was worked in silk on wool and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in its fine, original beveled frame.
