30 Mary Newport, 1829, England This handsome sampler well represents the many motif and verse samplers made in the British Isles throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is balanced in its design, precise in its execution and cautionary in its verse. Mary Newport included a plethora of classic sampler motifs: deer, baskets, squirrels, birds, trees, and flowers. She finished her sampler on May 7, 1829, and it has remained in its original black painted frame with a gilt liner. Silk on linen, it is in very good condition and conservation mounted.
