26 Elizabeth Warne, circa 1835, Pennsylvania This colorful Pennsylvania sampler exhibits some wonderfully developed Quaker design motifs as well as the influence of Pennsylvania German schools of needlework. The floral sprays, center cartouche and squirrels are Quaker in origin while the reclining stag and facing lions are Germanic. The sampler is very similar to another piece that we owned some years ago, which was dated 1832. Elizabeth was most likely the daughter of either Elisha Warne of Philadelphia or Felix Warne of Bucks County; they were the only families with this last name in southeastern Pennsylvania in the 1830 Pennsylvania census. Further research may reveal more specifics. The sampler was worked in wool on linen and is in very good condition with slight loss to the wool. It has been conservation mounted into its original fine mahogany veneer frame. Sampler size: 17W' X 161/4\Price: $2,650. M. Finkel e9 Daughter. DDDDDDDD
