M. Weston

 England, 1760

sampler size: 16¾” x 12½” • framed size: 20¼” x 16” • sold

In the style of some of the finest mid-18th century samplers, this outstanding sampler features a beautifully stitched text excerpted from a highly respected, published poem. As the title indicates, this is from Part One of the Satires written by Dr. Edward Young (1683-1765).

The richly designed and skillfully worked floral border is also a characteristic of English samplers of this period. The composition emanates from a graceful sun-like motif that contains the inscription and date. Notable as well are the angel heads and wings in the upper corners; their curly dark brown hair is formed with many tight French knots. Winged angels and putti are motifs found on some of the finest English samplers and these two are especially fine.

Worked in silk on wool, the sampler is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and, significantly, remains in its fine original frame and sanded liner.
