Jane Nunn,
England, 1815
Jane Nunn worked in unusually tight and fine stitches, creating a wonderfully refined sampler. The English motif register at the bottom includes tent-stitched baskets of fruit, tiny dogs, birds, butterflies and berry sprigs, all worked in classic mirror-image format. Notable as well is the charming tri-colored leafy cartouche surrounding the name and date. The verse that Jane worked was excerpted from a poem published in England in the late 18th century and she worked her letters with great precision.
A border of fat pink strawberries frames the composition well and is complimented by an outer sawtooth border with little stylized elements worked in lustrous ivory floss.
Worked in silk on wool, the antique sampler is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in its fine, original Hogarth frame.
