Elizabeth Hull

Westchester, New York, 1832

sampler size: 21¾” x 15½” • framed size: 25” x 19” • sold

We are pleased to offer this very handsome, large sampler, which is signed along the top, “Elizabeth A. Hull aged 13 June 23 1832 Westchester New York.” The pictorial scene is particularly worthy of praise – the fine, double chimney house shown in three-quarter perspective has a small dependency (likely a kitchen, note its very tall chimney), the fences and fence posts, geometric trees and the pair of out-sized urns filled with flowers.

The Hull Family in America, compiled by Col. Weygant (published by The Hull Family Association) states that the emigrant ancestor was George Hull (1590-1659), a surveyor, Indian trader, magistrate and statesman. The family lived in Fairfield County, Connecticut for many years. By the mid 18th century, one branch of the family headed by Jabez Hull (1706-1771) removed to Salem, Westchester County, New York. Elizabeth’s grandfather, Isaac Hull (1744-1812) served in the Revolutionary War, in the Westchester County Militia.

Elizabeth was born on October 13, 1818; she was the daughter of Jeremiah and Sally (Banks) Hull of South Salem, Westchester County, New York. In 1837, Elizabeth married Aaron Keeler (1812-1893), a farmer also of South Salem. They didn’t have children and Elizabeth died in 1889 and is buried in South Salem Cemetery along with her parents and grandparents.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. A photo of the back of the sampler taken prior to mounting is instructive as to the coloration and condition of the sampler. It has been conservation mounted and is in its original beveled frame.
