A very endearing and finely stitched small English sampler, this was made by Susannah Milner and is dated 1801. The scene portrays a small house, smoke coming out of the chimney and a tall lady holding what is likely a basket of flowers. The register above that features a basket with a pyramid of fruit, two little dogs, stylized trees and large hearts. The wonderfully moralistic verse reads,
“Stray we from virtue / Peace then wings her flight / And leaves the soul / In everlasting night.”
Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into a 19th century beveled frame in original black paint with a gold liner.
