Susan Ann Drake

New York, New York, 1809

sampler size: 14¼" x 12¾" • framed size: 16½" x 14¾" • sold

A praiseworthy sampler depicting a portrait of a fine basket of flowers, this was made by Susan Ann Drake of New York and dated May 22nd, 1809. We find it to have an appealing simplicity as well as an interesting sophistication.

Susan was born on July 20, 1799, to Augustine (aka Augustus) and Tabitha (Fowler) Drake who lived in New York and Westchester, NY. They were married in 1794 at Friends Meeting in Purchase, NY. The 1757 marriage of Susan’s grandparents, Augustine Drake and Susannah Stinnard was published in Collections of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, vol VIII (New York, 1928). Susan remained single and died in 1853, at age 53. Notice of her death was reported in the New York Evening Post.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a molded walnut frame.
