Many samplermakers who continued their education in the needle arts learned to make fine silk embroideries. This excellent example depicts a still life composition of grapes, peaches and strawberries set on hillocks under a graceful willow tree. The shading of the fruit and the grass is particularly adept. A beautifully stitched double oval provides a wonderful enclosure, with flowering branches above and delicate blossoms on vines below.
A mid 20th century label from The Old Print Shop in New York was attached to the back of this silk embroidery, along with a note stating that it was from Albany.
It is in excellent condition, worked in silk on silk, with a new eglomise mat and gold frame.
