A beautifully made sampler, this is signed, “Sarah Schank March 6 1829.” A detailed depiction of a wonderful, large public building - perhaps a courthouse - dominates the composition while birds, deer and dogs provide animation. A pair of hearts indicate Sarah had gained expertise in the eyelet stitch and the three-sided border of diamonds and little leaves offers an unusual graphic appeal.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in its outstanding, original black and gold painted frame.
