English needleworkers very occasionally made small hanging pockets in the style of samplers and designated them as gifts for family or friends. We find these to be highly endearing and are delighted to offer this excellent example. It is embellished with a heart, a heralding angel, a flowerpot and a basket of fruit along with smaller motifs, and is inscribed, “A GIFT TO JANE HANKINSON 1830.”
Worked in wool and silk on linen, it retains its original woven linen tape for the edging and hanging loop. The back is the original printed fabric, see the image below taken prior to mounting. It is in very good condition with some slight loss to the wool, now conservation mounted and in a period frame.
