Hannah Erden

This crisp, tightly worked 1817 sampler by Hannah Erden offers a very pleasing composition with excellent embroidery. Alphabets in upper and lower case letters as well as numbers and various geometric bands, including those worked with tiny eyelet stitches, fill the upper part of the sampler. An arcaded vine with strawberries separates the top section from the lower, which boasts an openwork basket of flowers flanked by distinctive stylized trees. A delicate border with tiny hearts frames the composition.

The sampler is worked in silk on wool and is in excellent condition with one area of weakness to the wool. It has been conservation mounted in a black and gold molded frame.
