This sampler presents a depiction of a fine tazza filled with a handsome arrangement of flowers surrounded by an excellent floral wreath; the plinth sitting on little feet elevates the center of the composition nicely. One of the samplermaking traditions in the Philadelphia area in the 1820s through 40s includes this genre and schoolgirls produced many variations of similar samplers. Elizabeth Good’s 1831 sampler is a lovely one.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in very good condition with a slight water-line discoloration near the bottom. It has been conservation mounted and is in a molded and black painted frame.
