A most appealing sampler, this was made by Eliza Tomlinson in 1823. It features particularly fine needlework and an engaging depiction of a mother bird feeding her three baby birds in a nest. Additionally, excellent eyelet stitches form the Roman numeral date. As we can see, Eliza ran out of space at the end and compensated accordingly.
The border of organic flowers and berries on vine meets at the top with a delightful little flower basket flanked by four lovely butterflies.
Worked in silk and wool on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted. It remains in its fine original maple frame with a gilt liner.
