This finely worked sampler is made up of 20 different knitted patterns and techniques, all accomplished in extremely fine white cotton. This would have been rolled up and kept for reference throughout the life of the needleworker so that she could replicate the patterns for small knitted objects such as gloves or socks. The back is as beautifully finished as the front.
Other similar ones are documented as the products of Alsatian convents.
Each end is finished with a little buttonhole, and a tiny red cross was stitched on one end. It is in pristine condition.
