sampler size: 15½” x 14½” • framed size: 17½” x 16½” • sold

Ann Cass stitched this handsome and neatly worked sampler when she was just eight years old in 1802 and working under the tutelage of a skilled instructress. An image of the back of the sampler (shown below) proves the care she took in keeping the openwork gauze ground fabric clean of stray threads. Working in rich, earthy colors she stitched classic sampler verse, in which, notably, she replaced most of her v’s with w’s. A pair of wonderful golden birds perched on simple geometric plants face each other along the bottom and a surrounding border of fat strawberries complete Ann’s work.

Stitched in silk on the aforementioned openwork gauze linen, her sampler remains in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in its excellent original frame.
