Harriot Richards, Map of England, 1799 \ stitching of map samplers began in the eighteenth century, when school curriculums broadened to emphasize more practical subjects such as mathematics, geography, civics, and the natural sciences. To aid in the study of geography, girls created map samplers,\to Z by Pamela A. Parma!, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This striking and meticulously worked sampler, A Map of England and Wales, made in 1799 by Harriot Richards, is one of the finest of this genre that we have known. The boundaries of the counties and the lettering were executed in very fine cross stitch and it is all urrounded by a border of beautifully realized chenille flowers tied with a shaded blue ribbon, also ' orked in chenille. Interestingly, the samplermaker placed blue fabric behind the linen in all areas excepting England and Wales. \\ orked in silk and chenille on linen, it is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted with a later eglomise glass mat and beveled maple frame. ize of the oval: 231fz'' x 201fz'' Framed size: 28\Price: $5400.
