sampler size: 9½ x 10¼ • framed size: 12¼ x 13¼ • sold

French needleworkers continued making samplers late into the 19th century, learning and practicing their alphabets often so that they could stitch very beautiful trousseau monograms. The work on this one is extremely fine and the letters are exquisite, some involve raised work. Notable as well are the scrolled embellishments worked with couching in the lower corners and the richly worked scalloped edge.

Worked in silk on linen, this is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a late 19th century gold leaf frame.
