sampler size: 4" x 4¼" • frame size: 12” square • sold

There existed a very appealing tradition of English samplermakers making exquisite miniature samplers as presentation gifts and this is a one of loveliest that we have come across in quite some time. The inscription, “A trifle shows respect” is a particularly endearing sentiment and sits amongst the delicately stitched motifs – butterflies, hearts, stars, diamonds, flowering plants and a two-handled footed vase of flowers.

Worked on silk on fine linen, this is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into a period maple frame with a gilt liner.
