We are pleased to offer this fine Scottish sampler with its enormous visual appeal and extremely fine needlework. Margaret Corner was born on October 5, 1823 to John and Margaret Corner, whose initials top the columns of family initials. Interestingly, John was a tailor and clothier. Margaret remained single and in Edinburgh; according to the 1881 census, she was living with her mother and sister, Eliza, taking in lodgers. She died in 1884. We are grateful for expertise of antiquesamplers.org and their assistance in researching this maker.

Margaret stitched many lines from a poem written by James Beattie (1735-1803), a noted Scottish philosopher, moralist and abolitionist. The cartouche-like surround for this verse is formed of tiny linked and leafy flower blossoms. She framed her name, town and date with crossed laurel branches and flanked this with delicate octagonal enclosures. Using minute stitches inside the double frameworks, Margaret stitched, “No one shall provoke me with impunity,” the motto of the Royal Stuart Dynasty of Scotland, and “God and my right,” the motto of the Monarch of the United Kingdom. A fine cottage scene decorates the bottom portion of the sampler.

Details and techniques such as the tiny birds and open-tailed peacocks in the upper pictorial band, the little bird and birdhouse, the lustrous silk forming the leafy trees and the two lower classic corner elements add wonderfully to the sampler. All of it is rendered with very precise and fine needlework.

The sampler was worked in silk on wool and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a burl wood frame.
