sampler size: 10¼” x 8” • framed size: 12¾” x 10½” • price: $950

An endearing little sampler, this includes an aphorism that we have always loved and which was included on many praiseworthy samplers from the 18th and very early 19th centuries, “Let virtue be a giude [sic] to thee.” Along with this, the samplermaker, Izanna Willson, featured large alphabets, narrow side borders and a good band of flowers and leaves along the top - two of the blossoms are partially unfinished.

As stitched on it, the sampler was made in Milford, a town southeast of Worcester and the Willson / Wilson family seems to have ties as well to nearby Upton and Hopkinton. While we haven't been able to find out much about Izanna, we do know that she died quite young, just three years after she worked this sampler in 1830 and Upton Vital Records indicate that she was from Hopkinton.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a beveled mahogany frame.
