sampler size: 11½” x 15” • framed size: 15” x 18¾” • price: $600

While greatly unfinished, there is a certain appeal to this 18th century Dutch sampler. The outline and architecture of a handsome house sits on a checkerboard lawn and a nicely developed vase of flowers is flanked by stylized peacocks. The center cartouche and inscription indicate the maker’s initials were GS and that she was 13 years old in 1793. Following the alphabet and numbers along the top are likely more initials, perhaps family and classmates. The coloration of the sampler is original, as indicated by a photo taken of the reverse prior to mounting, see below.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a pine frame.
