A very charming, pictorial sampler, this was made by 9-year-old Genevieve Houdin who lived in Cloyes Sur le Loir, in the Loire Valley, southwest of Paris. This picturesque town is historically noted as birthplace of Stephen of Cloyes, a 12-year-old shepherd boy who was one of the leaders of the Children’s Crusade of 1212. The samplermaker included a scene of a church in a country setting along with many wonderful birds, flowering trees in planters, a butterfly and basket of fruit all beautifully framed with a fine border of flowers, buds and leaves on a well-defined straight edge. French sampler are relatively scarce and we’re pleased to offer this very pleasing example.

Worked in silk on linen, it is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted. It is in its excellent original painted frame.
