Scottish samplers can offer tremendous appeal with strong color and a wonderful assortment of motifs and we are delighted to offer a sampler that does precisely that. Signed, “Ann Simpson St. Andrews December 16th1837,” the sampler features Adam and Eve under an apple tree, a three-towered castle flanked by lions, many birds, little dogs, many potted flowers, baskets of fruit and trees. Also included are eleven paired letters that don’t seem to be initials – perhaps they are abbreviations of some sort.

The sampler maker may have been the Ann Simpson who appears in census records born about 1826 and living in Strathmiglo, a town about 20 miles from St. Andrews.

Worked in wool and silk on wool, the sampler is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted into a figured maple frame with a gold beaded liner.
