Watercolor of a Bird, on paper, American, circa 1840

Price: $725, Sight size: 7" x 5"

We occasionally come across charming watercolors done in the early to mid 19 th century by schoolgirls and boys. More often than not the subject matter is naturalistic birds and flowers, in keeping with the interest engendered by John James Audubon and his four volumes, The Birds of America , which were published between 1827 and 1838. These featured life size portraits of over one thousand native birds. This is a detailed depiction of a male goldfinch sitting on a branch of a grapevine. Watercolor, both stencil and free-hand, was applied and the talent of the painter is clearly in evidence.

It is in excellent condition and is in its original gold leaf frame.
