Young girls in charity schools and orphanages in various European countries learned practical hand sewing and tailoring skills that could be applied to a future career in service or to the obvious expectations that they would be able to make clothing as a wife and mother. Lessons resulted in the production of various examples that were proof of the student’s skills. Additionally, these would have been saved for future reference. Offered are two carefully made linen panels, likely worked by the same maker. The larger one is a graphic repetition of tucked pleats and the smaller one offers pleats, feather stitching, buttonholes, button loops and deep ruffle. Both are conservation mounted but unframed.
