It is always fortunate to find two samplers that have remained together, whether made by sisters, aunt and niece, mother and daughter, or in this case, two samplers by the same girl. In this instance we can remark on Betty Green’s improvement from one year to the next.

Betty was born in 1810 in Ingleton, Yorkshire, northern England. She stitched her first of the two samplers at the age of 10, just before her 11th birthday, as she so notes in her inscription: “April th 9 / Betty Green / Aged 10 Years / 1821.”  This dedication is surrounded by classic elements, such as overstuffed baskets, potted plants, trees, small dogs and a lion. Above this are rows of alphabets and, notably, ligatures, which are less commonly found on samplers.

Her larger, second sampler was worked the following year, and the inscription reads, “Betty Green Ingleton 1822 fecit” [Latin, meaning, “I made this”]. Her composition reflects her advancement in the needle arts – she included a verse and a finely worked house flanked by trees and unusual women with curving arms. Below are very good potted flowers, trees, rabbits, deer and swans, all nicely arranged around her inscription. She completed this sampler with decorative double border, as well.

We know that Betty Green was christened on June 14, 1810 in Ingleton and that her father was William Green. On January 6, 1835 she married Georg Coward in Ingleton and they remained there and are listed in electoral records of 1859.

Both samplers have been worked in silk on linen and remain in excellent condition. They are conservation mounted into matching maple frames.
