Skill in the needle arts was highly important for the great majority of women in the 19th century. Tools and objects that supported their craft held significance as well. This fine, turned mahogany spool holder contains spindles for ten spools, with delicate metal-rimmed holes for access to the thread. The craftsmanship is particularly exceptional, and was likely presented as a gift to an equally accomplished needlworker. It retains its excellent, original finish.
