sampler size: 16½” x 15½” • framed size: 18½” x 17½” • price: $1600

This sampler features a beautiful flower arrangement in a vase with butterflies, birds and smaller flower baskets, all framed by a very good border of varied colored blossoms on a curvilinear vine. This composition is an excellent example of the very stylish samplers made in the 1830s and 40s throughout the United States. The samplermaker’s initials, SFD, are stitched in pale silks flanking the base of the vase and the sampler descended in the family from the time that it was made until just recently. Identified as Susan Frances Davis, she likely lived in the mid-Atlantic states or possibly Virginia.

Worked in silk on linen, the needlework is in excellent condition and the linen has several areas of weakness and darning. It has been stabilized and conservation mounted, in a molded and black painted frame.
