From the mid-19th century on samplermaking was no longer an integral part of schoolgirl education and many stitchers, both young and old, turned to working needlework pictures onto perforated or punched board.

Remarkable about this example is the use of striking blue-colored board, something we have not seen prior to this piece. The board has fortunately been left visible in the background of this composition, creating a very handsome sky. The needlework features a red building, accessible by two coral-colored paths with gates in the foreground. Bordered by trees on either side, the composition also features a lazy dog, laying on the lawn.

The needlework was accomplished with Merino wool, which holds color well and imparts a rich quality to the overall aesthetic. The needlework is in good condition with some very minor loss, and is in its fine, original frame.
