sampler size: 13” x 11” • framed size: 15” x 13” • sold

Worked by an eight-year-old, Sarah Shann, in 1820, this delightful sampler features a pleasing symmetrical format in classic English style. Small and nicely worked motifs, including many flowers, baskets, birds, pine trees, hearts, little dogs, a rabbit and a deer decorate the sampler well, sharing space with two large and handsome flowering trees and a central stylized floral element. Alphabets, a numerical progression, a biblical quotation and the inscription indicate that Sarah was also adept in stitching her letters and numbers. The composition is grounded by a narrow lawn and surrounded on four sides by a narrow wavy border with flower buds. This sampler clearly served as a testimony to the maker’s education and early accomplishments in the needle arts.

Worked in silk on linen, it is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into a black molded and painted frame.
