This is a finely made and endearing miniature sampler worked in 1815. It features an appealing verse about education forming the tender mind, written by famed English poet Alexander Pope (1688-1744). Many teachers and schoolgirls, both English and American, were exposed to this widely published verse, which appears with minor variations on numerous samplers of the period.

A basket with a pyramid of fruit, tiny apple trees, sprouting plants and diamond motifs provide embellishments, along with tightly worked horizontal bands that separate the lines of alphabets and inscription.

Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition with minor weakness at the very edge. It has been conservation mounted into a fine early 19th century black frame with a gold liner.
