sampler size: 17½" x 12¼" • framed size: 20” x 14¾” • $3800

This fine sampler is part of a group made in Haverhill, Massachusetts and was made in 1804 by nine-year-old Sally Sargent who lived in the nearby town of Amesbury. The inscription reads, “Amesbury July 30 Sally Sargent Born in The Year of our Lord 1795 This wrought in the 10th year of her age.”

Shared characteristics of this Haverhill group are the handsome and unusual geometric border arrangement, the vine of blossoms, buds and leaves and the pots of flowers. The date of 1804 was carefully placed at the end of the verse which reads as follows, "This needle work of / Mine doth tell when / a Child is Learned well / By my Parents I was / Taught not to spend my / Time for naught."

The towns of Amesbury and Haverhill are located near one another in the northeast corner of coastal Massachusetts. Sally Sargent was the daughter of Joshua and Miriam (Buzwell / Bussel) Sargent, born April 1, 1795, the tenth of their twelve children. The Sargent family was in Massachusetts by the 1630s as documented in Sargent Record: William Sargent of Ipswich, Newbury, Hampton, Salisbury and Amesbury, New England … by Edwin Everett Sargent (1899), provides excellent information and photocopies are included in the file of research that accompanies the sampler.

The Amesbury Vital Records include the marriage of her parents in 1787 and her own marriage in 1833 to Benjamin Hoyt, who was a carriage maker in Amesbury. They had at least two children and Sally died in 1854. She is buried in Bartlett Cemetery along with her parents, husband and a son.

The sampler is in excellent condition, worked in silk on linen and conservation mounted into a black and gold carved frame.
