framed sizes: 9¾” x 16½”; 11¼” x 15¼” • price for the pair: $450 $315

Young girls in charity schools and orphanages in various European countries learned practical hand sewing and tailoring skills that could be applied to a future career in service or to the obvious expectations that they would be able to make clothing as a wife and mother. Lessons resulted in the production of small items of clothing and other small examples that were proof of the student’s skills. We have these two examples of linen, hand-sewn sleeves with cuffs, each with three finely stitched buttonholes and each with feather stitching edging the sleeve, no doubt these were made by the same maker.

Now conservation mounted and framed in oak frames.
