An endearing little sampler, this is signed, “Nancy Tilton Aged 13 Years Stratham 1800,” and features alphabets, bands of design and a folky depiction of flowering buds sprouting from little hillocks flanking a two-handled vase of flowers. The color palette is very appealing, with a fresh green used for much of the work. The quality of the needlework is excellent as seen from a photo of the back of the sampler, taken prior to mounting (see below).

The daughter of Abraham and Hannah Tilton, Nancy was born in 1787 in Stratham, a village just southwest of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The 1790 census shows Abraham and family living in Stratham as well. Nancy married Gordon Moore (1784-1859) and they lived in nearby Northwood. They had one child, a daughter, Celeste, born in 1834. Nancy died in 1847 and is buried in Harvey Lake Cemetery in Northwood.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in an early 19th century painted frame.
