sampler size: 11¾” x 12½” • framed size: 14¼” x 15” • sold

Featuring colorful motifs centered on wreathed initials, this sampler includes a wonderful depiction of leaping deer – symbolizing both gentleness and pride – along with a large dog and various birds. Flower arrangements inside a two-handled urn and a cornucopia, along with a basket of fruit, anchor the bottom of the composition nicely. The device used for the date of this sampler is unusual and we’re certain that it indicates that it was completed on February 18, 1837.

Worked in wool on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition with a few very minor stitches missing. It has been conservation mounted and is in a 19th century black painted frame.
