A beautifully made sampler with appealing composition and splendid motifs, this is a classic example of the fine Dutch samplers made in the 18th and 19th centuries. Most interesting is the large, wonderful, blue and white Delft vase that features a scene of a lady with a servant holding a parasol over her, a Chinese inspired subject. This depiction is one that we have never seen on any sampler previously but one that does appear on various Delft forms such as vases, teapots, chargers and bowls. The samplermaker filled the vase with an excellent, free-form flower arrangement.

The majority of Dutch samplers are signed with initials rather than the maker’s full name, as is the case with this one. Worked in silk on linen, the stitching is extremely fine throughout. The needlework is in excellent condition; the linen field has some slight discoloration and darning. The sampler has been conservation mounted and is in a molded and black painted frame.
