sampler size: 7 x 10" • framed size: 13¾” x 10¾” • sold

The maker of this small sampler presented a delightful assortment of motifs arranged in a balanced composition but remains anonymous. This may have been a practice sampler worked in anticipation of a more elaborate work. Included are butterflies, birds, a dog, an owl, many potted plants and flowers and several crowns. The needlework is extremely tight and fine throughout.

Worked in silk on wool, this is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a fine 19th century gold leaf frame.
