A sweet little marking sampler, this is signed, “Margaret Dureyea Tehrune Magdalene Born August 27 1800,” along with alphabets, a brief numerical progression and the initials, AT and MT – most certainly those of her parents. The Dureyea and Terhune families are both early Dutch ones, their histories intertwined in the area around New Brunswick, New Jersey. We were able to find some records about the samplermaker and while she was given the name Margaret, she stitched Magdelene on her sampler and used this during her lifetime. In 1819, she married Isaac V. Boice (1798-1876) and they had at least three children. She died at age 78, on March 18, 1879 and is buried along with Isaac, who predeceased her by three years, in First Reformed Church Cemetery in New Brunswick.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in good condition with some slight loss to a few of the letters. It has been conservation mounted and is in a cherry frame.
