We are very pleased to offer this large, extraordinary and early Spanish sampler which is signed, “LO HIZO JUANA DOMINGUEZ SIENDO DISCIPULA DE MI SEÑORA DOÑA ANTONIA FERNANDEZ EN LA HEDAD DE DOZE ANOS EN EL MES DEN OBIENBRE 1743”, indicating that it was made by Juana Dominguez at twelve years of age in November 1743, under instructress Mrs. Antonia Fernandez.

Characteristics that are shared with other fine Spanish samplers include the many elaborate bands of delicate patterns, stylized corner elements and an inscription worked around all sides of the sampler. A pastoral scene dominates the center; this was worked in extremely fine tent stitch and depicts a young girl on a bull with a flock of sheep by a pond under billowing clouds. The overall composition is beautifully balanced and the sampler retains its excellent, original binding with silk tassels, another traditional Spanish needlework device. Related examples are published in Samplers From the Victoria and Albert Museum by Clare Browne and Jennifer Wearden (V&A Publications, 1999) as plates 70, 71 and 72.

Worked in silk on linen, it is in excellent condition with some very minor wear to the ivory silk in a few areas. It has been conservation mounted into a black and gold painted frame.
