Jane Richings worked her sampler at the age of eleven years in 1824. As with so many English samplers, this one displays a centralized house with small motifs flanking it in a symmetrical fashion. This house is particularly appealing because of its geometric style. A grid-like pattern over the façade, possibly representing bricks, and the flat angular lawn gives this charming sampler a contemporary guise, as well. The traditional depictions of the plants, birds, hearts and dogs had appeared on English samplers for many generations.

Polychrome alphabets and numbers enhance the composition nicely, worked in tight precise stitches and divided by bold border lines. Miss Richings framed her sampler agreeably with a charming vine of strawberries.

As Jane states on her sampler that she was eleven years old in 1824, we believe her to be the Jane Richings who was born on July 23, 1813 in Oxford, England to Robert and Hannah (Hastings) Richings. She married John Walker when she was thirty years old, in 1844.

Worked in silk on wool, the sampler is in excellent condition with some very minor weakness to the wool. It has been conservation mounted into a black molded frame.
