Sampler size: 12½” x 10½” • Framed size: 15½” x 13¾” • sold

Jane Jewell worked this splendid sampler in 1798. In a significantly neat manner, Jane stitched a classic composition but the unusual oval format renders it substantially more appealing than most samplers. Revealing her elevated skill, Jane worked this visually symmetrical arrangement centered on biblical verse, Ecclesiastes 12:1. Flower sprigs, popping with outlined petals in bold color were worked above and on each side of the verse. Below, a zebra, unusual to find on a schoolgirl sampler, and a fat deer flank a tree with perched birds; additional tiny animals and birds spot the space around these larger motifs. A beautiful vine displaying a variety of blooming flowers create the stitched oval framework of the sampler.

Worked in silk on wool, Miss Jewell’s sampler remains in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in its fine, original gold frame.
