Jane Greaves worked this splendid sampler using very fine stitches throughout. She included an extensive verse, decorative bands and framework and large detailed birds perched on leafy branches. The verse is a full hymn, “Weak and Irresolute is Man,” by William Cowper (1731-1800), an English poet and hymnodist. The letter-perfect text is remindful of the printed page.

Jane stitched her inscription in the same delicate hand, wreathed in an equally fine budding vine with larger rich pink blooms on either side. Miss Greaves precisely worked the pair of birds, as well, with feather-like stitching on their wings. The airiness surrounding this register balances the meticulousness of the text creating a pleasing composition overall.

Worked in silk on wool, this sampler remains in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted into a painted oak frame.
