A very nicely made and endearing little sampler, this is the work of Jane Elizabeth Woodberry and, along with alphabets, lists her birth and that of her younger brother, Charles. They were the children of Peter and Deborah (Gage) Woodberry who lived in Beverly, a town just north of Salem. In 1831, Jane married Robert Rantoul, Jr. (1805-1852), a prominent lawyer and politician. He was educated at Phillips Andover Academy, studying under John Adams, and at Harvard. He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, the US Senate, finishing the term of Daniel Webster, and in the US House of Representatives. A liberal Democrat, Robert promoted social justice and reform. Jane and Robert had two sons, Robert and Charles. Robert died in 1852 and Jane in 1870. They are both buried in Central Cemetery in Beverly; there is also a cenotaph monument in Congressional Cemetery in Washington for Robert. We can be certain that Jane led an interesting life as his wife.

The sampler was worked in green silk on linen and has a lovely drawn-work edge. It has been conservation mounted and is in a later 19th century frame.
