This is a splendid pictorial sampler that depicts excellent biblical and genre scenes along with a good assortment of other motifs. Its most unusual attribute is that the maker, identified by her initials, ICH, stitched the crest of the city of Hamburg: three towers of a castle flanked by a pair of crowned lions. The four biblical scenes are Jacob Wrestling the Angel (Genesis 32:24-30) at lower right, the Spies of Canaan bearing grapes from the Promised Land at lower left, Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39) to the left of the date, and a fine Adam & Eve with a blue serpent twisting up the apple tree. Some of the smaller motifs on this sampler are the milkmaid, stork, little cottage, deer facing a tree and various flowers and fruit baskets, some of which can be found on good northern European samplers.

The stitching is very fine throughout and the colors used were varied and very appealing. The alphabet appears along the top of the sampler and borders of three different patterns provide further interest. The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in very good condition with minor weakness to the linen. It has been conservation mounted and is in a painted frame.
