The samplermaking tradition continued through the end of the 19th century in some areas and we occasionally find later samplers that exhibit the same excellence in the needle arts as early ones. Along with alphabets and a numerical progression, G. Brugman included several delicate bands and, notably, a wonderful row of eighteen patterned-darn blocks recreating delicate woven configurations that may have been found on fabrics of the period. Additionally, she demonstrated her high level of skill by stitching the sampler so that the reverse of the needlework is just as beautifully finished as the front. Delicate drawn-work borders at top and bottom add further to the appeal.

Worked in silk on linen and in excellent condition. Unframed.
