This is a strong example of a classic English sampler. Implementing key elements, the work was composed symmetrically centered on a larger potted flowering plant above an overstuffed basket of fruit, and at the top, though modestly, the maker’s inscription: AM 1806. Mirroring the left and the right, trees and flowers, birds, dogs, crowns and hearts fill the space, and a bold geometric border surrounds the sampler on all four sides.

Worked in silk on wool, it is in very good condition with one secured area of weakness to the linen just above the maker’s initials. It has been conservation mounted into a period painted frame.
