Elizabeth Leaming Griffith made this beautifully colorful and endearing little sampler when she was 12 years of age and it descended along with a family note that provides detailed information (see below). Eliza ran out of room after the “AGEd” and found space for “12” a few rows above. Alphabets and numerical progressions are interspersed with handsome, solidly stitched patterned bands of needlework designs. All of it was accomplished in an excellent palette of strong colors which survive in their original strength as the sampler was not framed until very recently.

Eliza Leaming Griffith was born in 1791 in Hamptonburgh, Orange County, about 30 miles southwest of Poughkeepsie, New York State. In 1819 she married Anthony Watkins Eager (1786-1862) of nearby Neelytown. The Eager family figures prominently in the history of the area, mentioned in early published chronicles. Anthony’s great-grandfather, William Eager, was born in Ulster, Ireland and emigrated in 1728. One of his children, William, Anthony’s grandfather, seems to have been born during the journey on the ship.

Eliza and Anthony, a farmer, became the parents of at least three children and in 1870 Eliza, then a widow, was alive and still living in Hamptonburgh with her son Samuel and his family. She died in 1882 and is buried in Neelytown East Burying Ground.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition; it has been conservation mounted into a late 19th century frame.
