Many alphabets and a delightful, pictorial register with large-blossom flowers, quirky willow trees and a low basket of fruit make this sampler nicely appealing. It shares characteristics with other samplers from southern New Hampshire and this fact was helpful when identifying and researching the samplermaker.

The verse, a particularly appealing one, reads, ”May Heaven’s choicest gifts descend / To gild the path of my young friend / And as her knowledge shall increase / Her mind be filled with Perfect Peace.”

Eliza Ann George was born in 1814, the daughter of Susannah (Morrill) and Samuel Chase George of Franklin, New Hampshire, north of Concord. The family removed to nearby Salisbury and, in 1835, Eliza married Caleb Smith in New London, New Hampshire. They had five children and Eliza died in 1847.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a molded and painted black frame.
